Thanks for visiting alicemadethat.com. When I started this blog, over a year ago, it was because I quite fancied the idea of sharing my almost daily bakes with like-minded baking fanatics. I’ve seen some great foodie blogs out there and thought, why not. I’ll give it a go too. So, this site is about me, my bakes, recipes, cake shop visits and inspirations.

As far back as I can remember, I’ve been intrigued by, excited about and happy to fill myself to the brim with baked goods. Recession or no recession, you can’t put a price on a freshly homemade cake. I love the planning, whisking, folding, licking out of bowls, baking, decorating and finally, the consuming. I think it must also be one of the best forms of therapy out there. I bake most days and only pause when I run out of tin space. I recently solved that problem by simply buying more tins.
My earliest memory of cake was 26 years ago, when I was four years old, at my older sister’s birthday party. My Mum had made a hedgehog-shaped cake for the occasion and whilst leaning over the bench to get a closer look at it, I somehow ended up falling headfirst into the thing. It was as an accident (not that my sister will ever believe it and still holds a grudge) and the chocolate mint Matchmakers (for the spikes) didn’t exactly make for a comfortable landing. Anyway, I think that day just might have been the trigger for my cake passion. Unless the combination of sponge, butter icing and Matchmakers up nose somehow genetically modified me to love the stuff. A bit like when Spiderman got his powers after being bitten by a spider. Just with a bit less power perhaps.

At first, it seemed a bit intimidating and also slightly arrogant to assume that anyone would want to read or look at pictures of things that I think about and make. There are also a lot of very good food blogs out there. But whether or not this blog ends up being read by only five people or whether it gets read more widely isn’t really the point of the exercise and certainly isn’t why I’m undertaking this project. I’m just having fun in tackling something new and hoping that it’ll turn out to be an enjoyable learning curve. Obviously, if it turned out to be a massive success, I wouldn’t mind too much either.
I really, really hope that you’ll enjoy reading this, taking down recipes/tips and making comments or giving your honest opinions. Hopefully all of the above. I’m no domestic-goddess-in-the-league-of-Mary-Berry-or-Delia-Smith, but just a big, big fan of baking and want to share the baking love.
